Poem: “Love”

Written by:

“What is love?”

I asked one night

as we lay looking at the stars.

“What’s love?”

You said

as you gazed into my heart.

You gave a little laugh

then turned up to the sky.

I thought you would ignore me

but you closed your eyes and sighed.

“Love is the feeling of butterflies”

you said,

all starry-eyed.

I scoffed and said “yeah right”,

but you laughed and called it true.

“What else is love?”

I asked,

and bade you to go on.

You smiled

yet again,

and stared up at the moon.

“Love is when—“

You began, hand upon your heart

“Your eyes meet across a room

And everything goes still

And you know

Deep down

they only look at you”

“Love is when you think of them

And turn all shades of pink”

“Love is when you look at them

And find that missing link”

“Love is working all day long

Just to see their face”

“Love is staying strong

To wipe the tears off of their face”

Memories flash behind my eyes,

like the shooting stars above us.

I thought back to the times we’ve cried

And held each other close

I think of all the times

You could heal me with a smile

Is that love?

When we read each other’s minds?

How about when you took my hand

And spun me ‘round the floor?

That time we danced so silly

And ended up all sore?

Did you love me then?

Or is it still the same?

Did you always love me?

Or was it not a thought at all?

I see the moon glimmer

And suddenly I know

There’s something I must tell you

And it weighs upon my soul

I turn to you

And say

“Love is what I feel

When I look at you”

And I hope you feel the same.
